Michael: presidents report. Rod’s funeral, Jeff spoke beautifully with hardly a dry eye there. A very thoughtful and appropriate touch was the classic Mercedes hearse Rod truly went out in style. Michael then read out a letter to the club from Josie, Rod’s widow.
Dear club members,
I’d like to first make mention of the Rod Barrett Memorial Ride.
I wish to convey to the organisers my sincere appreciation. I’m
overwhelmed by this gesture and the thought that hopefully someone will
benefit in some way from the contributions made to the Brain Foundation.
Although Rod would never have thought of himself a worthy recipient of
such praise, I know the charitable aspect of this ride will sit
comfortably with his memory.
By joining the club and being able to ride on a regular basis was just
the thing Rod needed once finishing full-time work. Taking on the
position of club president was a challenge initially, but, I think a
challenge he relished, and he embraced it wholeheartedly. Over the years
he found himself amongst a wonderful group of friends who were like
minded in their love of everything “bike”, and the pursuit of that
“dream ride”.
As with many in the club, restoring a sad hunk of decaying metal to its
former beauty was as much a love for Rod as the ride. His knowledge on
this subject was as broad as my ignorance of anything mechanical! …but
that worked out okay for us.
Of course nothing could beat blasting out the cobwebs on a Sunday run or
a journey somewhere a little further. It would take days for the grin on Rod’s face to subside after a bike trip away. We would talk about the scenery, the accommodation and the
people encountered while travelling, but I never once quizzed him about
the actual riding. Maybe I was happy to go with “what happens on the
ride stays on the ride”. To see the absolute joy he took in riding and
socialising with you all contributed to my happiness in turn.
The support offered by members of the club for any assistance I may now
require around the property is the most thoughtful gesture. I’m truly
grateful.
For this, and all the good times he spent in your company, I’m thanking
you all so very much.
Josie.
